Clinical Oncology FRCR

Clinical oncology FRCR

Clinical oncologists treat solid tumours with radiotherapy (external beam & brachytherapy), chemotherapy (cytotoxics, biological therapy, molecularly targeted agents) and increasingly with a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy (concurrent chemoradiotherapy- CCRT).

Medical oncologists focus more on drugs development and delivered chemotherapy alone to treat solid tumours whereas haematologists only treat blood-related cancer.

In UK, in order to pursue training in Clinical Oncology, the prerequisite is membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). Trainees need to obtain fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) by examinations before a certificate of the completion of specialist training (CCST) is awarded. FRCR part 1 comprises core scientific information or basic sciences of cancer- cancer biology/radiobiology, clinical pharmacology, physics and medical statistics.  FRCR part 1 examination comprises four papers of single best answer (SBA) questions where cancer biology and radiobiology combined in one paper and the 3 subjects mentioned above as 3 separated papers tested. The exam papers for the four subjects are held twice a year. More complete information regarding FRCR part 1 examination can be obtained in the official website of FRCR i.e syllabus, dates, fees and sample of SBA questions which are very useful for the candidates.

I have just passed my FRCR part 1 in clinical oncology and understood the difficulty in studying lots of the recommended reference texts in the midst of hectic working schedules. I hope my revision notes will help you to grasp the basic principles and know ledges that tested in the FRCR part 1 examination and useful during last minutes revision and it is not meant to replace standard reference textbooks. I hope that you can pass all FRCR part 1 subjects in one attempt and probably not 2!!!
